The Canary Islands are leading an unprecedented transformation in their tourism model. Thanks to a strategic alliance between Turismo de Canarias, CSIC, and the archipelago’s public universities (Universidad de La Laguna and Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), a model of regenerative, blue, and sustainable tourism is being consolidated. Currently, 63 researchers are working to ensure that tourism is not just an economic activity, but also a driving force capable of restoring and protecting our natural environment.
Science and technology at the service of the visitor
This ambitious program is structured through six scientific projects aimed at improving applied knowledge in the sector and advancing toward climate neutrality. Among the most notable initiatives are:
- Destination of Volcanoes: 50 volcanic geosites of high scientific value have been identified with the goal of creating interpretive routes supported by immersive technologies, such as virtual reality and 360º visits.
- A Sea of Sounds: Through the use of hydrophones and underwater cameras, a database of sounds and images of marine biodiversity is being developed, promoting responsible and non-invasive observation tourism.
- Protection against climate change: Research is being conducted on the capacity of beach sand, such as olivine, to capture carbon, integrating these advances into educational routes aimed at visitors.
- Smart water management: The application of satellite technology allows real-time monitoring of sea quality and temperature, ensuring efficient management of coasts and ports.
Teide: a unique landscape that comes to life
Within the volcanic landscapes project, the surroundings of Teide stand out as an undeniable gem. What makes this location unique is not only its altitude, but also its geological identity, which can now be interpreted and understood through science. Visitors can enjoy safer and more accessible experiences, where each rock formation tells the story of the origin of the islands.
